Abstract: The Marcia Haag Collection features an extensive English-Choctaw lexicon from the late 1960’s as well as audio recordings of language lessons, tutorials and other educational materials produced in the early 21st century that are pertinent to the Cheyenne and Choctaw languages.
Acquisition Information: These records came to the Sam Noble Museum in 2004 and 2018 by Marcia Haag and Mary Linn.

Collection Scope and Contents: Since 2000, Marcia Haag has served as an assistant professor of linguistics at the University of Oklahoma, where she teaches general linguistics, senior essay, syntax, semantics, morphology and field methods. She earned her doctorate at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, in 1996.
Her research has consistently focused on Native American languages, primarily Choctaw and Cherokee, in addition to theoretical work in lexical roots and comparative word formation. She is the author of a number of books with long-time collaborator and native Choctaw speaker Henry Willis. Those include the two-volume set “Choctaw Language and Culture: Chahta Anumpa” and “A Gathering of Statesmen: Records of the Choctaw Council Meetings 1826-1828,” a translation of the 1826-1828 secretarial notes of the 19th century Choctaw chief Peter Pitchlynn.
The Marcia Haag Collection at the Sam Noble Museum was established in 2004. The collection is comprised of educational materials produced in the late 1960’s and early 21st century and pertinent to the Cheyenne and Choctaw languages. In addition to a dictionary and grammar tools for saying words and phrases, there are audio recordings of language lessons and tutorials featuring Joyce Twins, former Cheyenne language instructor at the University of Oklahoma, and Norma Buffalo Meat.
