Collection Scope and Contents: The Gus Palmer Collection contains print and audio resources on the Kiowa language. “Kiowa Road” is composed of translations in Kiowa and English of a series of Kiowa oral histories prepared by the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma for the Kiowa Tribal Museum/Resource Center and Kiowa Tribal Membership. The work covers topics ranging from history, origin, and religion, to the eagle and medicine, and includes contributions from more than two dozen Kiowa elders, including Bessie Ahhaitty, Harding Bigbow, Nelson Bigbow, Vickie Boettger, Jr., Hazel Botone, Bob Cooley, Durell Cooper, Margaret Daingkau, Stephen Hall, George Kauyedauty, Angela Kerns, Lance Littlechief, Merle Littlechief, Tom Littlechief, Elaine Nimsey, Clarence Pipestem, Jasper Sankadota, Frank Saumty, Lucy Saumty, James Silverhorn, Yeale Spottedbird, Guy Tainpeah, Mary Tartsah, Esther Toppah, Louie Toyebo, Duke Tsoodle, George Navy Tsoodle, Isabel Twohatchett, Marvcellus Williams, and Stephen Zotigh.
Also contained in this collection are a series of original reel-to-reel recordings featuring audio lessons for learning the Kiowa language, prepared and spoken by Dr. Gus Palmer, former professor of anthropology at the University of Oklahoma.
