Collection Scope and Contents: Jim Rementer is the project director for the Lenape Talking Dictionary. He began studying the Lenape (Delaware) language in the summer of 1961 when he traveled from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (part of the original homeland of the Lenape people) to Oklahoma where he met some of the last fluent Lenape speakers. A year later Jim returned to work with tribal elder James H. Thompson. The two worked together until Thompson passed away in 1964, at which point Mr. Rementer continued his work with other Lenape speakers, including Thompson’s daughter, Nora Thompson Dean.
In 1997, Jim Rementer was named director of the Lenape Language Project by the Delaware Tribe. With grant support from the National Science Foundation and the Administration for Native Americans, he has been successful throughout his life in documenting Lenape and collecting and archiving original works pertinent to its study, including those that appear in the Jim Rementer Collection at the Sam Noble Museum.
The collection features music, stories, folktales, prayers, conversations and language lessons in the Delaware languages or Unami and Munsee. The voices of Delaware speakers Nora Thompson Dean, Emily Johnson, and Todd Thompson are heard throughout this collection of unique materials originally produced in the 1970s, 1980s and early 2000s, and restored by the Sam Noble Museum in 2011. The collection also features a Lenape Indian Cooking book, a combined effort between Nora Dean Thompson who was unable to finish the cookbook, and articles from Jim Rementer that cover the gifts of food, early forms of Lenape farming and cooking, plus traditional and contemporary recipes.
