Collection Scope and Contents: The Robert Schick Collection is a collection of three letters from Emahaka, Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma, handwritten in Creek, a Muskogean language spoken primarily in Oklahoma and distinct from the dialect of Seminole Creek, spoken primarily in Florida. Along with the letters are the original mailing envelopes, each stamped with postal dates from before statehood.
Accompanying each item is a corresponding typed translation completed by Margaret McKane Mauldin, former Creek instructor at the University of Oklahoma, in the summer of 2008. Mauldin rewrites the original letters for clarity and then translates each sentence by breaking down the grammar before presenting a complete translation. Prior to this, she explains her process in analyzing the handwriting and justifies her translation.
