Summer Explorers

Experience science first-hand through a variety of discovery-based programs each summer for children ages 4 to 14 and families. All classes are taught by trained staff. Please contact the education department at (405) 325-1008 for more information or for accommodations on the basis of disability. Don’t miss out! All cancellations must be received 10 business days prior to the start of the program for a refund or transfer to another program.

Registration

Registration begins Jan. 8 for members and Jan. 22 for non-members.

Don’t miss out! Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Participants are required to bring any forms sent via confirmation email on or before the first day of the program.

T-Shirt

Each youth participant will receive one Summer Explorers T-shirt each summer. The T-shirt will feature artwork from the cover of this brochure and is complimentary with registration. Please indicate your size when you call to register. Note: Scout, family and 4-year-old program prices do not include a T-shirt for participants.

Outdoor Classes

These classes will take place in the best classroom of all: the great outdoors! We will meet at the museum and travel in vans to local parks. Booster seats are provided for children 8 and under and are available for children over age 8 upon request of parents/guardians. Participants should be dressed to get wet and must bring a water bottle.

Indoor Classes

These classes will stay on-site: exploring the amazing galleries, collections and outdoor spaces at the museum!

Friday, June 1, 9:30 to 11 a.m.

How many dinosaurs can you name? Discover what ancient creatures roamed Oklahoma through games, songs, crafts and lots of fun for you and your little one! Name That Dinosaur is an indoor program.

Super Scientists
Friday, July 6, 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Join us at investigation station! Experiment and explore through games, songs and crafts as you and your little one learn about the natural world around you. Super Scientists is an indoor program.

Pond Explorers
June 4-8, 8 to 10 a.m.

Get your feet wet! Find out what’s living in the water as we explore different ponds around Norman. Pond Explorers is an outdoor program.

Bugs and Slugs     
June 11-15, 8 to 10 a.m.

They’re in the air, in the water and even under your feet! Get ready to get dirty as we burrow into Norman parks for everything that’s creepy, crawly and cool! Bugs and Slugs is an outdoor program.

Nature Explorers
June 18-22, 8 to 10 a.m.

Do you know what’s living in our local parks, ponds and streams? Join us as we explore parks in Norman to search for plants and animals of every color, size and shape. Nature Explorers is an outdoor program.

Cool Critters
June 25-29, 8 to 10 a.m.

Wildlife comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  Discover the different kinds of critters that live in the world and search for a new one each day! Cool Critters is an outdoor program.

Animal Babies
June 25-29, 2 to 4 p.m.

Get ready to grow up wild! Learn about your favorite baby animals and the different ways they survive. Animal Babies is an indoor program.

Shark Week: I
July 9-13, 8 to 10 a.m.

Join us as we jump into the oceans of long, long ago! We will explore animals of ancient seas and dive into our temporary exhibit “Megalodon: Largest Shark That Ever Lived.” Whatever the adventure, we are sure to make a splash! Shark Week: I is an indoor program.

Dinosaur Detectives
July 16-20, 8 to 10 a.m.

Are you on the hunt for fossils? Explore fossils of all shapes and sizes as we investigate dinosaurs and their relatives, just like paleontologists do! Dinosaur Detectives is an indoor program.

Grossology
July 23-27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Are you ready for gross science? We will explore awesome and weird sciences and conduct the coolest, craziest experiments. Join us and become an expert in grossology. Grossology is an indoor program.

Wild Wonders

Have you ever thought about how many wild and wonderful animals are right in your backyard? We’ll explore different habitats to discover what kinds of wild wonders are living all around us! Wild Wonders is an outdoor program.

Creepy Crawlies
June 11-15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Do you like creatures that give others the creepy crawlies? Join us as we study animals that slither, creep and crawl! Creepy Crawlies is an outdoor program. 

Slime and Scales I
June 18-22, 2 to 4 p.m.

Spot a slippery salamander or touch a tiny turtle! We’ll study scaly and slimy animals in their natural habitat and learn how to safely catch and handle them. Slime and Scales I is an outdoor program. 

Down in the Dirt
June 25-29, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Explore the world under our feet and find out why life underground is so sweet! Join us as we dig the day away and explore worms, insects, snails and the difference between dirt and soil. Down in the Dirt is an indoor and outdoor program.

Shark Week: II
July 9-13, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What kinds of creatures roamed the oceans millions of years ago? Join us as we explore the mighty Megalodon, the largest shark that ever lived, and other giants of the deep! Shark Week: II is an indoor program.

Cool Cretaceous Creatures
July 16-20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hang out with some of the greatest dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era! Join us for a journey back through time to the peak of the dinosaur age. Cool Cretaceous Creatures is an indoor program.

Weird and Wacky Science
July 23-27, 2 to 4 p.m.

We’ll create concoctions, make gooey ooze and try out exciting experiments! Join us as we see what happens when science gets wacky! Weird and Wacky Science is an indoor program.

Life in the Wild
June 4-8, 2 to 4 p.m.

Discover the way our world works by exploring the plants and animals around us! Investigate local habitats and discover how scientists conduct research out in the field. We will use our scientist skills to solve mysteries hiding in our streams, parks and more! Life in the Wild is an outdoor program.

Get Lost
June 11-15, 2 to 4 p.m.

Would you know what to do if you got lost? Be prepared to get down and dirty as we learn to use a compass, build a fire and search for shelter. Get Lost is an outdoor program.

Slime and Scales II
June 18-22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Explore the daily lives of reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats. We’ll learn how to safely catch and handle these interesting animals, plus how and why we should protect them. Slime and Scales II is an outdoor program.

Shark Week: III
July 9-13, 2 to 4 p.m.

Prehistoric predators, fossil fish and beasts of the blue. Join us on a journey to the past as we explore the oceans and the amazing creatures that roamed within them millions of years ago. Shark Week: III is an indoor program.

Ologist 2.0: Behind the Scenes
July 16-20, 2 to 4 p.m.

What really goes on behind the scenes at the museum? Have you attended Ologist in the past and can’t get enough? Join us for all new tours and new museum scientists to find out how your favorite exhibits are created! Ologist 2.0: Behind the Scenes is an indoor program.

Science Mysteries
July 23-27, 8 to 10 a.m.

How do crystals get their shape? Why do compasses point north? Can you make a secret circuit? Solve mysteries and complete challenges during our week of experiments and fun! Science Mysteries is an indoor program.

Nature at Night
June 11-15, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

What comes out when the sun goes down? Explore the night with us and experience the many animals active in the evening. Come ready to discover a whole new world. Nature at Night is an outdoor program.
