Summer Explorers

Summer Explorers 2017 registration is now open! 

Experience science first-hand through a variety of discovery-based programs each summer for children ages 4 to 14 and families. All classes are taught by trained staff. Please contact the education department at (405) 325-1008 for more information or for accommodations on the basis of disability. Don’t miss out!

Ages 5 to 6

Cost: $60 for members, $70 for non-members

Cool Critters
June 26-30, 8 to 10 a.m.
Registration closed.

Wildlife comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  Discover the different kinds of critters that live in the world and search for a new one each day! Cool Critters is an outdoor program.

Scat: What's That??
July 10-14, 8 to 10 a.m.

What’s the scoop on animal poop? Why does it happen and why do we study it? Can you really track an animal using what it leaves behind? Join us as we explore the science of scat. Scat: What’s That?? is an indoor program.

Creature Features
July 17-21, 8 to 10 a.m.

Why do skunks smell so funky? What makes a vulture vomit? How do butterflies ward off predators? We’ll explore the strange, impressive and totally cool ways that animals defend themselves. Creature Features is an indoor program.

Animal Babies
July 17-21, 2 to 4 p.m.

Get ready to grow up wild! Learn about your favorite baby animals and the different ways they survive. Animal Babies is an indoor program.

Dinosaur Detectives
July 24-28, 8 to 10 a.m.
Program is full, wait list only. 

Are you on the hunt for fossils? Explore fossils of all shapes and sizes as we investigate dinosaurs and their relatives, just like paleontologists do! Dinosaur Detectives is an indoor program.

Grossology
July 24-28, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Program full, wait list only. 

Are you ready for gross science? We will explore awesome and weird sciences and conduct the coolest, craziest experiments. Join us and become an expert in grossology. Grossology is an indoor program.

Ages 7 to 8

Cost: $60 for members, $70 for non-members

Creepy Crawlies
June 26-30, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Do you like creatures that give others the creepy crawlies? Join us as we study animals that slither, creep and crawl! Creepy Crawlies is an outdoor program.

Space Cadets
July 10-14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Calling all astronomers!  Join us for a camp that is out of this world. What is a shooting star? How do rockets get all the way to outer space? Become a space cadet and find out! Space Cadets is an indoor program.

Cool Cretaceous Creatures
July 17-21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hang out with some of the greatest dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era! Join us for a journey back through time to the peak of the dinosaur age. Cool Cretaceous Creatures is an indoor program.

Weird and Wacky Science
July 24-28, 2 to 4 p.m.
Program full, wait list only. 

We’ll create concoctions, make gooey ooze and try out exciting experiments! Join us as we see what happens when science gets wacky! Weird and Wacky Science is an indoor program.

Ages 9 to 11

Cost: $60 for members, $70 for non-members

Ologist: Behind the Scenes
July 10-14, 2 to 4 p.m.

What really goes on behind the scenes at the museum? We will meet scientists, artists and exhibit developers to find out how they work together to create the exhibits you see when you visit your favorite museums! Ologist: Behind the Scenes is an indoor program.

Registration

Space is limited and advance registration is required. To register, please pay online or call the education department at (405) 325-1008. Participants are required to bring any forms sent via confirmation email on or before the first day of the program. Registration for all classes closes the week before the class is due to begin, provided the class hasn't filled early. 

Outdoor Classes

These classes will take place in the best classroom of all: the great outdoors! We will meet at the museum and travel in vans to local parks. Booster seats are provided for children 8 and under and are available for children over age 8 upon request of parents/guardians. Participants should be dressed to get wet and must bring a water bottle.

Indoor Classes

These classes will stay on-site: exploring the amazing galleries, collections and outdoor spaces at the museum!

T-Shirt

Each youth participant will receive one Summer Explorers T-shirt each summer. Please indicate your size when you register. Note: Scout and Family program prices do not include a T-shirt for participants.

Scholarships

Limited financial assistance is available for families who qualify. To apply, please submit a copy of your free or reduced lunch award letter to the education department.
