Collection Scope and Contents: The Carolyn Quintero Collection is the world’s largest modern collection of the Osage language, a member of the Dhegihan branch of the Siouan language family. The collection provides deep insight into the life’s work of the late Carolyn Quintero, a researcher who studied Osage throughout her life.
Carolyn Quintero grew up in Hominy, Oklahoma, hearing Osage spoken in the homes of her childhood friends. She received her BA from the University of Oklahoma in French, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 1983, Quintero opened Interlingua, Inc., a language translation service stationed in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
While the Osage Nation Language Department currently is an active program that is producing young speakers, Quintero worked with the last fluent first language speakers. She helped lead community language classes in the 1990’s with Frances Oberly Holding of Hominy, her primary consultant. She also worked with Hazel Harper, LeRoy Logan, Mary Standing Bear, Preston Morrell, Myrtle Oberly Jones, Margaret Red Eagle Iron, Edward Red Eagle, Sr., Jo Ann Shunkamolah Alred and Laura Shannon. Quintero is the author of “A First Course in Osage,” “Osage Grammar” and “Osage Dictionary,” which drew on the work of Bob Bristow. She was an Affiliated Research Associate at the Sam Noble Museum until her death in June 2008.
The Carolyn Quintero Collection contains more than 40 manuscript boxes of unpublished (primarily Osage) materials. In addition to her notes, the manuscripts include:
- The field notebooks of Robert Bristow, an amateur linguist who worked on Osage for many years and collaborated with Quintero before his death in 1988
- Copies of the James Owen Dorsey Osage materials from the National Anthropological Archives and the Jesuit archives from St. Louis University.
The collection also contains reel-to-reels and a film from the 1980s, in addition to more than 100 audiocassette recordings of Osage, including stories, historical narratives, songs, language classes, conversations, interviews and Quintero’s dictionary work from the 1990s.
In processing this collection, catalog numbers were issued sequentially to all file folders and media, maintaining the collector’s original order. Print-based objects appear first in the Contents Listing, followed by audio-visual materials. During the cataloging process, some file folders were found to simply contain missing pages or pieces from other folders. The NAL staff made the conscious decision to relocate the found materials with their known counterparts, thereby leaving some catalog numbers obsolete and removed from the inventory. This explains any missing catalog numbers from the Contents Listing section below.
